Music therapy

Makhanda Music Therapy is the first music therapy practice in Makhanda, Eastern Cape. Run by Lieva Starker, the practice accepts clients of all ages and abilities.
Music therapy is a psychological clinical intervention that uses music as a therapeutic tool. It can offer opportunities for self-expression, which can take place musically, verbally or non-verbally, in a safe and contained space. The music in sessions is used to address non-musical aims, and clients do not need any musical skills or abilities to benefit from this form of therapy. It can be beneficial for people of all ages and abilities.
Music therapy can involve singing, listening, playing instruments, song writing, talking, and much more.

The Process
Consultation
Free 20-minute consultation with prospective client or legal guardian (if client is under 18) in order to find out what the needs of the client are and to discuss how these needs can be addressed.
Trial
Four initial sessions.
Review
After the trial sessions, I will meet with the client or legal guardian to decide if we are a good fit, and how to proceed.
Sessions
Music therapy sessions will be scheduled for a regular weekly slot. This will provide stability and structure which will help with the progression of sessions.
Evaluate
Together with the client, we will regularly review the progress of sessions to evaluate how sessions are going, and to discuss the needs that still need to be addressed.
